Wahls Protocol Review


A truly inspiring read on how the power of food and lifestyle can affect health, The Wahls Protocol describes how Dr. Terry Wahls was able to reverse her Multiple Sclerosis (MS) through eating a nutrient-dense diet and incorporating other lifestyle changes.  Dr. Wahls was eating keto long before keto was cool!


One of the key takeaways from The Wahls Protocol is that it answers the big question of, “Why is it often recommended that those of us with autoimmune conditions eat such large quantities of nutrient dense food?”  Check out Chapter 8 and her details on liver support for the answer.
If we have one critique of this book, it is that it is written from a very scientific perspective, which is great, unless you’re not scientifically inclined.  I would recommend that if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with the science and which of the three diets to begin with (Wahls Diet, Wahls Paleo, and Wahls Paleo Plus), start with the least restrictive - the Wahls Diet.  It’s better to implement the Wahls Diet effectively and reap the benefits, rather than begin with the most restrictive diet - Wahls Paleo Plus (which is keto) and have difficulty sticking with it.

My diet now falls somewhere between Wahls Paleo and Wahls Paleo Plus.  I've learned to listen to my body, and tailor my diet to what my body needs. I eat a variety of brightly colored vegetables with lean protein and healthy fats. To allow some flexibility in my diet (and life!), I will also have some gluten free grains a few times/week, and I also enjoy a few squares of dark chocolate!

Overall, I think The Wahls Protocol is a great resource for explaining the importance of eating a very nutrient dense diet if you're trying to recover from chronic illness.
