What do you do when keeping a food diary DOESN’T solve all of your autoimmune problems?
If you’re like me, at some point on your chronic health journey you were encouraged to keep a food diary.
Compared to the diaries from adolescence which were all about the drama surrounding your “crush”, THIS type of diary focuses on a different type of drama - how you tolerated (or didn’t tolerate) a certain food, supplement, or experienced a symptom flare. Not fun.
As a Ph.D. trained scientist, I was ALL IN when it came to keeping a food diary. It was basically like keeping another lab notebook!
Dutifully, every morning (while I was eating the few foods I could tolerate), I would record what I ate the day before. I was hoping that if I could “catch” the problematic foods, and remove them from my diet, then my health issues would be solved - just like that!
And, I kept this up for THREE and a HALF YEARS!
Well, guess what?
Keeping a food diary wasn’t the magic fix for my severe autoimmune issues.
Sure, it helped me identify some problematic foods, but because my body was stuck in the high stress Fight/Flight or Freeze state, documenting my “perfect” diet had only a minimal positive impact on my health.
It wasn’t until I addressed the Big 3: the Brain, Nervous System, and Mindset that my body ACTUALLY started healing.
So, RIP food diaries! I'm going to continue to focus my energy on what has been MOST impactful for my healing!
